Chicken Cream Sauce Potjie

6 chicken breasts
12 baby onions, peeled
Chicken spice to taste
10 baby potatoes, peeled
250g rindless bacon, cubed
750ml frozen mixed vegetables
4 medium onions, diced
300g mushrooms, sliced
60ml smooth apricot jam
Aromat to taste
100ml water
1 packet of oxtail soup
15ml worcester sauce
1 packet of onion soup
500ml fresh cream or 250ml Cream + 250ml milk


  • Spice the chicken with the chicken spice.
  • Heat the oil in the pot and braai the bacon for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the onions and apricot jam and braai until soft.
  • Now add the chicken, water and worcester sauce, cover with the lid and allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes.
  • Add the onions and potatoes and allow the pot to simmer for a further 10 minutes.
  • Next add the veggies and the mushrooms.
  • Sprinkle a little Aromat over the pot, cover with the lid and allow to simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Mix the soup powder with the cream and add it to the pot. Cover and allow it to simmer for a final 30 minutes.

    This potjie was amazing! I bought my potjie pot 2 weeks ago and decided to do this recipe for it’s initiation. Thus was the first ever potjie I made and it turned out BRILLIANT! I used cream of chicken soup and oxtail soup, and my dog stole the bacon when I wasn’t looking but it still turned out amazing! My girlfriend and her family loved it and went for seconds!

    Best chicken potjie i have made to date!!!!! thick and creamy ,chicken was so soft it just fell of the bone. I am defintely going to make this one again. Seems like this one has knocked my beef potjie off its pedastalwith my girls 🙂

    hello, I am planning to make this recipe for the first time. Does it really need 4 diced onions and 12 baby onions? I am thinking about omitting one or the other. Those of you who have made it before, what do you think?

    This is the best ,cheapest, chicken potjie with the best tasting mushrooms!, there is just 3 things to change: 1. use WHITE onion soup powder and Oxtail soup powder 2. Use 500g button mushrooms and don`t slice them 3. don`t be scared to use more apricot jam. I have made this potjie almost 10 times and every time everyone loved it.

    I love anything made stove top, just because if you get it right, it comes out absolutely fabulous. This is great stuff an I bet worcester makes a difference!

    I have a very similar recipe that my friends in SA gave me a few years ago. It is a big hit back in the UK when we go on winter camping trips in the Lake District – we get the fire going and cook this amazing potjie!!
